Final project meeting.

Final project meeting was held in Madrid on the 22nd of August 2023. The status of the project was revised and near future actions related to the final report preparation were discussed. The follow-up of the project was a major issue on the meeting and it was decided that the MOOC course will be available and update for the next 5 years.

Despite the very hot weather in Madrid we managed to meet and discuss important issues in a friendly atmosphere. The meeting was held in an impressive building of Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Minas y Energía of UPM Madrid.

The 3rd progress meeting took place in Tallin on the 19th of June 2023.

Final arrangements were made before our final meeting in August which will be held in Madrid, Spain.

Multiplier event took place on the 1st of December 2022 at the Silesian University of Technology and was accompanying a conference “Energy security of Poland today and tomorrow – opportunities and threats”
https://www.polsl.pl/rg/konferencja-gzr-2022

Over 70 representatives from industry, local and national authorities and academia attended the Meeting. During the panel discussion the following issues were addressed:

•    The key areas that build sustainable management in the mining industry include economic, social, environmental and political dimensions. What are the key factors that can build a sustainability mining index in these areas in European countries?
•    Should there be a universal index for all types of mining in Europe or should they be differentiated? What are the arguments in support of each of these options?
•    When talking about the sustainable management of raw materials, we cannot move away from the current state of full globalisation. The Covid-19 experience has shown the high raw material dependence of Europe. In this light, should we use raw materials sourced in an environmentally sustainable way or is this ethical approach unrealistic? If it is unrealistic, why?
•    How should curricula be built? Should they only take into account technical knowledge or also an ethical view of technology?

Mid-term progress meeting was held in Gliwice at the Silesian University of Technology on the 2nd of December 2022. It was the first project meeting where we met in person (before that pandemic restrictions not allowed to do so and all the meetings were held online). We have updated the status of the project and agreed on the future steps to complete IO 4.

The IO 1 gave us some interesting insights on the expectations of people working in the extractive industry for acquisition of new knowledge related to circular economy.

Kick off-meeting was held online on the 30th of October 2021!

Short course for postgraduates

Waste from extractive operations is one of the largest waste streams in the EU. Most of the generated waste is inert or still contains some valuable raw materials and can be reused instead of being disposed. Modern processing methods can help in the reduction of waste disposal on the surface and close the loop in the extraction process. In this course you will learn the principles of circular economy apporach and practical applicaton of some of the methods of solid, liquid and gaseous waste management from the extractive industry.

Subjects:

  1. Circular economy - principles and regulations

  2. Mining waste management and/or circular subsurface CO2 utilization (incl geothermal energy) and/or cyclic H2 storage

  3. Modern processing methods

  4. Environmental impact assessment

  5. Energy Storage in abandoned coal mines – infrastructure CAES (iCAES)

  6. Waste disposal and Storage
